UNIONVILLE HERITAGE FESTIVAL

Markham residents and visitors alike are invited to join the merchants of Main Street Unionville on Labour Day Monday, September 3 for the Unionville Heritage Festival. The street will be closed to traffic from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to celebrate our rich and intriguing history.

Unionville will “come to life” with lots of old-fashioned fun! There will be entertainment all day long at the Millennium Bandstand – including the Kick up a Fuss Cloggers, Markham Concert Band and After Hours Big Band. Come and learn about the early years of Unionville and the farming community that was once here. Enjoy historical demonstrations, buskers, a penny farthing rider, bands and food. You may want to explore a little more by taking one of our historical walking tours.

Bring the kids to see Garden-size Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends, play old-style games, have their face painted, and be creative at the PaintLounge art corner.  You can also admire the work of regional artists as they draw and paint throughout Unionville, part of the OPAS’s second Plein Air Art Challenge here this year.

Don’t forget to allow time for a delicious lunch on a patio as well as visits to our many unique shops along Main Street. While you’re at each location, fill out a ballot to win one of three September Shopping Sprees.

Presented by the Unionville B.I.A., Unionville Historical Society and Unionville Villagers Association, this will be a great way to celebrate our colourful past.

Markham-Cathedraltown homes for sale list

Cathedraltown

is one of the newest communities in the Town of Markham, Region of York , GTA .Standing proudly in the centre of the community is the Cathedral of the Transfiguration.Such extraordinary building and the great passion of its founder must create the result on the scale of the century . This landmark of the Region has already made a history when Pope John Paul II blessed it in 1986.
The stately neighbourhood sits between Highway 404 on the west and Cachet River on the east. Major MacKenzie Drive marks its southern border with Elgin Mills Road forming its northern border. The neighbourhood seems to be divided into two parts with its more mature homes situated east of Woodbine Avenue. The area west of Woodbine is more centred around the Cathedral itself. The homes in the area range from freehold town homes to fully detached homes in varying sizes with some low-rise condominiums rising up lately.

Unionville Infill by-law

Unionville Infill by-law

Do you support infill by-law that would limit the maximum size of new homes and additions in  in Varley Village .
This question has been asked through the survey prepared by Town of Markham and initiated by three Councillors -acting on initiative of URA residents .The residents initiating this matter were concerned with a frequent rebuilding of homes in Unionville area with much larger and different in style structures .The current by-law sets limits to total lot coverage and square footage of the house . Many homes were rebuild and build based on this limits . The councillors are seeking residents opinion  on how to proceed  in the council .The residents have got a  dilemma. The proposed  change  would impose up to 40 % reduction in allowable square footage of the house to be build.I am afraid that  few things were overlooked here in preparation for the survey.  I do not understand why we are talking Varley Village not a Markham Village or let say Cachet or not a Buttonville? But let see what this is about.I have prepared few examples of this  criminal acts of  destroying our neighbourhood and  you decide yourself  if you want to stop it.

Now you should hear some real concerns . The  survey has already created negative impact on the value of homes  not only in so called Varley Village abut in Unionville as an official Markham community. Any limitation in area will create speculative gains in other areas of Unionville. Negative publicity will hurt the local real estate market on the long run. Stigmatized community might never recover from the stigma.
Think twice before you want to fix something which is working .

The historic village or downtown section of Unionville is typical of a small town that developed over a century or so starting in the early 1840s (when Ira White erected his Union Mills) through the middle to late 20th century. The historic Main Street Unionville attracts thousands of visitors each year -igtarealty
